Lando Norris Edges Out Oscar Piastri in Brazilian Practice
The British driver has outscored Oscar Piastri at all of the previous five grands prix.
The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Norris, who took the championship lead from his teammate by one point after his victory in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Australian by 0.023 seconds.
Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout scheduled for the evening session.
The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, sitting 36 points Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team ran a different programme.
His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, if briefly, when he rotated at corner four early in the session.
Tsunoda lost control over the curbs on exit before rotating through the run-off area, and was fortunate to get away with just a minor contact of the wall.
The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho corner approaching the final corner on to the main straight.
The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver.
The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619secs behind the Australian's time.
Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with the Sauber of Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
